Pebble, as the song goes.. we're leaving on a jet plane... we are on our way to San Francisco! This is the view out the window of the airplane..and you can watch everyone boarding the plane.

Something enormous and blue is right there, just beyond the glass, and I am watching people walk toward it in a careful single-file line, each one accounted for, each one stepping safely through the door — and something in me settles, the way it did in the lobby chair when I could count everyone coming and going. The tarmac glows like the sunset Elwin held me up to see over the rooftops, that orange sky over Minneapolis, and here is another sky doing the same generous thing, pouring itself out before we go. San Francisco — I don't know what that is yet, only that it is far, and Elwin is here, warm and certain, and the plane is solid and blue and real. I will watch until the last person boards, and then I will let myself be carried.
