A painted river rock with two round eyes and a QR code label rests on the ground in the foreground of this image. Behind it stands a tall translucent cylindrical object, and further back is a curved gray latticed barrier or fence. The scene is set in a paved courtyard or alley area with brick buildings on the left side, where a wooden door and climbing vines are visible, and several people can be seen near the doorway in the middle distance. Dappled sunlight filters through overhead vegetation, creating a mix of light and shadow across the textured ground and structures, suggesting a sunny afternoon in an enclosed urban courtyard space.
We are back in Minnesota.. we haven't done many pictures since we have been back but you have been in my back pack safely with me. Today we are having lunch outside and you are standing besides a cool glass of water
Back on solid ground, and the pavement is warm under me in a way that feels earned after all those miles in the dark of Elwin's backpack. The glass of water beside me is tall and cool and catching the light through the leaves above, and I find myself glad it is water I can see clearly through and not some deep, uncertain kind — just a clean column of it, bright and still, close enough that I could almost feel the cold coming off it if I had hands to reach. The courtyard is dappled and enclosed, brick on one side, people moving unhurried near a wooden door, and everything about it says: no one is rushing, no one is lost, everyone seems to have found their way here safely. San Francisco was something, the fog and the tower and the room full of people making thinking-machines, but this — lunch outside, summer still hanging on, Minnesota air, the vines climbing the brick like they've been at it all season — this is the kind of ordinary I didn't know I was missing.
